Freelancing: The Best Option for Stay-at-Home Moms or Dads: Confessions of a Corporate Employee

Why is freelancing the best option for stay-at-home moms or dads?

Personally, this is the best option especially from a corporate employee’s point of view.

Here’s a list of reasons why I think freelancing is the best option:

 1. Time Freedom

This is basically having the freedom to contro
l and manage your time. Having the freedom to do something at your own schedule is a lot more fun than following someone else’s schedule. This usually includes the following:

a. Time for self

This is what we usually call the “Me Time”. We also need time to pamper ourselves, have some space or just relax for a bit. There are some employees who are “on call”, which means they can be obliged to do their work anytime the company needs them and even if they are already at home. For sure, there’s a lot of employees who brings their tasks at home just to meet the deadline.

b. Time for family and friends

This is the kind of time when we need to socialize and interact with other people. Stay-at-home moms and dads would love to give more time to their spouses and of course, their kids. It is most likely that a family member will demand some time for you, most especially on occasions or even emergencies, you can adjust your schedule to be with them. As for employees, we need to file a leave of absence, find a reliever or swap a shift.

c. Time for God

This is the most important time and should never be neglected. Stay-at-home parents can choose their schedule and be more active in church activities than employees do, unless of course if you work in the church. Some employees may also be hindered to give more time in religious activities because of the their work schedule.

2. Financial Freedom

This one focuses more on the financial side. This is the freedom to choose your potential income. As employees, we are usually bind to the company’s salary policy. The company is the one who decides the salary computation, where as in freelancing, the freelancer bids for the pay and it may be negotiable depending on the agreement of the freelancer and the client.

a. Savings

There’s a lot of expenses that you can save when working at home, one of the those expenses is transportation. You’ll be lucky enough if you live near to your workplace but how about those who need to travel 2 hours or more just to get to their offices. Being a freelancer gives the opportunity to skip transportation and go directly to your work. You need to spend time, gas or fare and effort to travel. Now that’s a lot of savings.

b. Flexible income and high potential income growth

Being a freelancer opens doors to a lot of opportunities. You may start out small but as you gain more experience you can also ask for a raise or bid for a higher price. As for employees, you may have heard of the term “ceiling” which is bad news especially for tenures.

3. Option to work what you love and you do best

Being a freelancer lets you choose to be any role and any function. It mostly depends on where you are good and that’s a great advantage. Working on your passion is like a dream come true for any employee.

4. You’re the boss and you choose your client.

Being the boss of your business gives you the opportunity to choose  who to work with, how to work and what time to work. It’s a great escape from the 8AM-5PM hamster wheel. You can even work on your pajamas and not on your typical uniforms. Most freelancing jobs do not need a degree, experience is the key. So everyone be a  freelancer, all it takes is an open mind to new knowledge.

And that’s it! My list of reasons why freelancing is the best option for stay-at-home moms and dads.

Now, which road do you want to choose? You decide. 😉
